Connecting to CR1000X using USB causes WIFI to Disconnect.

ksaywell Jan 5, 2026 08:52 PM

When i use USB to connect to the CR1000X i find my WIFI drops out.

Normally i have a wired internet connection so no problem but yesterday was working away from my desk and found that when i connect the USB cable the logger acts as a network device and my laptop automatically tries to use this connection.

Is it normal for the CR1000X to show as a network device when connected via USB?

Being a work laptop i have no control over the network settings.

Yes, this is expected behavior.

When connected via USB, the CR1000X enumerates as a USB Ethernet (network) device. Most operating systems automatically prioritize a newly detected wired network over Wi-Fi, so the laptop switches to the logger’s USB network interface, causing Wi-Fi to drop.

The CR1000X does not provide internet access over USB—this is just for local communication. On managed work laptops, you typically can’t change this behavior. Common workarounds are to disconnect USB when internet access is needed or connect to the logger via Ethernet or Wi-Fi instead of USB.

Yes, it is possible to communicate with the logger via virtual Ethernet via the USB connection. The drivers create an Ethernet connection; try blocking it, disabling it by in the network connections on your PC.
